Goals

January 15, 2020

This isn’t really a blog. It is what the title says, random thoughts. I hope to collect my thoughts once a month and reflect on where my art is going. Right now I am thinking about goals. Last year my goal was to complete 24 quilts. Mission accomplished. This year I am not sure where I want to go. Do I want an aesthetic or career goal? Last year I bought an old Bernina. Where my Juki only does straight stitching the Bernina has several types of stitches. I would like to expand my repertoire of machine made marks. I could start a pile of small pieces and stitch up a storm. This can be a good way to explore and improve technique at the same time. On the other hand, I joined a gallery this year and need to work on self-promotion. Maybe I need to work on both.

What strange times. Pandemic, financial meltdown and social justice upheaval. They are all connected. The pandemic has exposed that police brutality is not the only problem. Every aspect of society needs examination.

I spent the first 2 months of social distancing working on small, intimate, hand-sewn pieces. But on my walks I began to see medical detritus. The pandemic is escalating our use of “disposable” items. I have started a new series of quilts related to my Plastic Sea series. The pandemic occurred because of our unbalanced relationship with the natural world. Maybe this upheaval for social justice can lead to an examination of all the ways we have made people and things “disposable”.
